Creating a supportive and engaging context is the first step toward empowering learners. As a teacher, you can ask:
- What connections can you make between what we’re learning and your own life or experiences?
- How does this topic relate to the world around us?
- How might this topic be important to your future career and life?
- What aspects of this topic are most relevant or interesting to you?
Constraints – Boundaries that Boost Creativity
Contrary to popular belief, constraints aren’t always negative. They define the boundaries that can ignite creativity. By clearly communicating constraints—be it time, resource limitations, or learning standards—we empower students to navigate within set parameters. Constraints are like the borders of a sandbox so students can play safely within it. Guide your students with these questions:
- What are the boundaries or limitations of this project or assignment?
- How can these constraints guide your approach to learning and problem-solving?
- How can you be creative within these constraints?
- What is out of scope?
- What is the level of quality we have to meet?
Choice – Power to the Pupil
Choice is about empowering students to make decisions about their learning. It involves selecting topics of interest, preferred learning methods, and ways to demonstrate understanding. Greater choice leads to greater investment in learning. Encourage choice with these questions:
- Which aspect of this topic would you like to explore further?
- How would you prefer to learn about this? (e.g., reading, group discussion, multimedia resources)
- How would you like to demonstrate your understanding or skills? (e.g., presentation, essay, project)
- What is the sequence of work that will best lead to your desired outcomes?

- What options do you have? Which one will you choose?
Consequences – The Mirror of Reflection
Consequences are the tangible and meaningful outcomes of the learning process. They’re not just grades—they’re the knowledge gained, skills developed, and personal growth achieved. Ask students these questions to help them see the link between their efforts and the outcomes:
- What knowledge or skills do you hope to gain from this learning experience?
- How will your choices impact your learning outcomes?
- How can you use the feedback you receive to improve your learning?
- Reflecting on your choices, would you do anything differently based on the results?
Collaboration – Learning Together, Growing Together
Collaboration brings it all together. It’s about creating a community of learners where everyone—students, teachers, parents, and community members—works together. Foster a collaborative learning environment with these questions:
- How can you contribute to the group’s learning and project goals?
- How can you learn from your peers during this process?
- How can we, as a learning community, support each other’s learning journeys?
